Growing Puppies Need Movement, Not Marathons
As Labrador breeders, one of the most common questions we hear from new puppy families is:
“How much exercise does my puppy need?”
Most people are surprised by our answer.
While Labrador puppies absolutely need exercise, more is not always better. In fact, excessive repetitive exercise during a puppy’s growth period can place unnecessary stress on developing bones and joints.
Our goal at Black Moose Labradors is to raise puppies that are not only beautiful but healthy, athletic, and capable of enjoying a lifetime of adventures with their families. Understanding how puppies grow is one of the best ways to help them develop into strong, sound adult dogs.
Understanding Growth Plates
Puppies are still very much a work in progress.
Unlike adult dogs, their bones are actively growing through areas called growth plates. These growth plates are made of softer cartilage that eventually hardens into mature bone as the puppy develops.
For Labrador Retrievers, many growth plates remain open until approximately 12–18 months of age, and some may continue developing closer to 24 months.
Because these areas are softer than mature bone, they are more susceptible to injury during the growth phase.
That doesn’t mean puppies should be kept inactive.
Actually, the opposite is true.
Puppies need regular movement to build muscle, coordination, confidence, and body awareness. The key is choosing activities that support healthy development rather than placing repetitive stress on growing joints.
The Right Kind of Exercise
When we think about puppy exercise, we prefer to focus on natural movement rather than structured endurance.
Excellent activities for growing Labrador puppies include:
- Free play in a safely fenced yard
- Exploring new environments
- Short walks at the puppy’s pace
- Swimming (when introduced safely)
- Play sessions with appropriate canine companions
- Confidence-building adventures
- Basic training sessions
- Gentle hikes on natural terrain
These activities allow puppies to move naturally, rest when needed, and develop strength without excessive repetitive impact.
When More Isn’t Better
The concern isn’t movement itself.
The concern is repetitive impact.
Activities that can place unnecessary strain on developing joints include:
- Forced running beside a bicycle
- Long-distance jogging
- Endless ball throwing sessions
- Repetitive jumping
- Excessive stair climbing
- Structured endurance workouts
Labradors are especially known for pushing through fatigue. Most retrievers are highly motivated and eager to please, often continuing long after they’re tired.
Unfortunately, puppies don’t always know when to stop.
That’s where we come in.
Part of responsible puppy ownership is recognizing their limits before they do.
Why Weight Matters So Much
If there is one factor consistently supported by orthopedic research, it’s maintaining a healthy body condition during growth.
Keeping puppies lean reduces stress on developing joints and can significantly decrease the risk of orthopedic issues later in life.
A Labrador puppy should have:
- A visible waist when viewed from above
- A noticeable tuck behind the rib cage when viewed from the side
- Easily felt ribs beneath a light layer of tissue
A few extra pounds may not seem like much, but during growth those pounds create additional stress on developing bones, joints, ligaments, and tendons.
Healthy weight management is one of the greatest gifts you can give your growing puppy.
Building Sound Adult Dogs Starts Early
Genetics play a major role in a dog’s future health, but they are only part of the picture.
Nutrition matters.
Exercise matters.
Body condition matters.
Daily management matters.
Every decision made during puppyhood contributes to the adult dog your puppy will become.
At Black Moose Labradors, we carefully plan our breeding program with health, temperament, structure, and longevity in mind. We want our puppies to thrive whether they’re hiking through the woods, swimming at the lake, competing in sports, hunting beside their owners, or simply curled up on the couch with their family.
Healthy Today. Strong Tomorrow.
Puppies need movement.
They need opportunities to run, play, explore, learn, and experience the world around them.
What they don’t need are marathons.
By focusing on age-appropriate activity, maintaining a healthy weight, and allowing growing bodies the time they need to develop properly, we can help set our puppies up for a lifetime of soundness and success.
Move them. Don’t overdo them.
Protect their growth. Invest in their future.
