No. Fox Red Labradors are purebred Labrador Retrievers.
The Labrador breed standard recognizes three coat colors:
- Black
- Chocolate
- Yellow
The fox red coat falls within the yellow color spectrum. Think of it as similar to how blonde hair can range from nearly white to deep golden. Fox red simply represents the darkest end of the yellow Labrador spectrum.
The Original Yellow Labradors Were Much Darker
Many people are surprised to learn that the earliest yellow Labradors were often much darker than the pale cream-colored dogs commonly seen today.
Historical records from the late 1800s show that many early yellow Labradors had rich golden and reddish tones. Over the decades, lighter yellow coats became increasingly fashionable, especially in the show ring, and darker shades became much less common.
As breeding preferences shifted toward lighter yellows, the darker fox red shade became relatively rare.
